Dear list,
Reid Goldsborough today, on Moneta-L posted the following.
Considering the problematic and serious nature of this charge, I
think it would be advisable to request that we not purchase this
until we have further word.
Thanks,

Someone recently posted a notice to every coin discussion group out
there, it seems, about the availability of the Bulletin on
Counterfeits on CD-ROM. I just heard from the publisher, the
International Association of Professional Numismatists (IAPN), that
this CD-ROM is an illegal pirated work.
Arthur Friedberg, president of the IAPN, says IAPN's attorney sent a
cease and desist letter yesterday to stop this illegal infringement.
There's a character here and elsewhere who says he has no problem
buying illegal pirated works. A pirated book or collection of magazine
articles is no different from a modern copy of an ancient coin sold as
a authentic. It's deceptive, and it's illegal. Breaking the law to try
to prevent others from breaking the law, being deceptive in the fight
against deception, is wrong and harmful to others.
Arthur Friedberg is requesting that people not be "overly" aggressive
in publicizing this infringement of their intellectual property as the
IAPN would prefer to handle the situation in a gentlemanly manner.
People here and elsewhere should know, before they make a decision
whether to buy this pirated CD-ROM, what it's all about. I'm going to
post this only here and let others publicize this elsewhere, with the
hope that they will adhere to Arthur Friedberg's request to keep
things gentlemanly.
